Welcome back to Cozy Midnight Collective.

SPEAKER_00

I'm Morgan. And I'm Lauren. Pull up a seat, lower the lights, and welcome to the Midnight Cinema Society Volume Two.

SPEAKER_01

Tonight we are opening up our personal screening room to debrief on everything we watched over the months of May and June. We have a massive slate to break down from the liminal dread of backrooms and exit eight to intense survival horror like Send Help and We Bury the Dead.

SPEAKER_00

We're also diving into Whistle Disclosure Day, Dangerous Animals, The Mortary Assistant, Hokum, and even taking a trip to the small screen for the TV series Widow's Bay.

SPEAKER_01

Grab your popcorn, make sure your dark roast is poured, and let's roll the tape. So we're gonna start with backrooms.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, let's start with backrooms. I loved it. That was probably like our most slash didn't the end, but yeah. No, like I'd say that's probably like our most anticipated movie so far this year. And especially since yeah, which House of Leaves is going. It's going just very slow. So slow.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But kind of overshot ourselves with that book. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes me like a year to read the whole thing. Yeah. Because I have to go slow while we're doing the other stuff, you know? And it you have to do your like give undivided attention and almost set up like yeah, you're doing some research.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, doing like your yeah, like having notes on the book.

SPEAKER_01

I can't read that book fast, but we're talking about backrooms. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, backrooms was was uncomfortable for sure, which is the point, right? Like nobody likes being within the backrooms.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I didn't just the way it started, like even his relationship with the therapist, I couldn't get that out. Like, I get like the type of therapy she was doing, like almost play therapy. Like, but that was uncomfortable. And then I was like, do they somehow also know one another? Because this is like the weirdest relationship ever. I just thought it was. And then progressively eerie throughout, like obviously finding the backrooms, yeah. And then to turn into like a giant himself. So that literally just formed when he made the commercial that he was making for the store.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because like the character looked like him as the character.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it was like from what I understand, the backrooms is pretty much what you your memories, but they're like twisted. Cause like, even how it ended with her, and like it was like her her childhood, and then like the house that she grew up in, and then that just like going into different levels of like different it just it's a brain fuck. I have an understanding now, but even then I still am kind of like, so wait, like what? Like, it's still very confusing. Yeah, and I think that's the point. Like, you're not really fully supposed to understand what the background is.

SPEAKER_01

But to my knowledge, it just goes on and on and on. I just thought so it's individual, like obviously it's an individual experience, but if there's other people there, your fucking nightmares can kill them. I get that, but like if you put just like random people in singularly, like they're all gonna like make up some different hell for themselves. Yeah. Cause I just thought when the kid died, the the boy in the beginning, like his employee that he like just so rudely shows up and like tells them like to come with him, or get them both fucking killed.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, these poor people.

SPEAKER_01

I thought something else got him and there was more not necessarily like the you aspect.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, like it's kind of like the monsters of the backrooms, not like himself. Yeah. Like you figured that it was like specifically backrooms monsters, like other dimension like thing. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think like the whole mental like psychology aspect to it, maybe that kind of like it didn't ruin it for me, but it was kind of like I would have much rather I would have been much more satisfied if it had just been these are backrooms monsters, you're stuck in the backrooms, you have to find your way out. Yeah, you know, like because like the video game is like kind of like that where it's like you're just going in and you're trying to get out, like you have to get through all these levels. When the monsters come, you have to hide. Yeah. And you're like, you know, gathering different stuff. And so it's just kind of like that is what I always assumed the backrooms was. Right. And I get maybe they're trying to add a twist to it.

SPEAKER_01

But which is fine, like you can yeah, because it's the background that's more confusing than it needed to be. It was like just a lot more psychological than I than I thought it would be. But it it worked well. I just wasn't like I just thought it was kind of stupid though at the end when it's like the big pirate got the big him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was kind of weird too. I I get that, yeah, for sure. And I was like, I mean, he was creepy, like I'll give him a few.

SPEAKER_01

He was, and I'm like, bruh, if you think he's not gonna fucking bite you, you're that was terrifying for sure. But yeah, and what was another good part, like the the lady that didn't scream or make any noise just like runs full sprint into a fucking wall. Yeah. Was like trying to get through the wall. Yeah, and so then I was like, oh, it's gotta be something crazy. And then he the large him, pirate him, marches in, and I was like, dang, yeah, dang it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it was a little bit of a lockdown.

SPEAKER_01

It was it was pretty good up until that point where I was like, Yeah, they kind of took a turn like three quarters of the way into the movie, and I was like, I just didn't envision that's like how it would be. Yeah, but I'm not a movie producer, wouldn't know where to start.

SPEAKER_00

No, we're we're literally, yeah, we're literally just two regular people giving our opinion on it, and we're not these renowned like film credits, like nothing like that. But I also think that's like what the movies are made for, is they're people like us. Yeah, so I mean, how would you rate it, like in your opinion? Half moon, but yeah, I'd say like half moon, I agree. Yeah, it's it wasn't bad. I think everybody should watch it at least once. But I think it was just the ending that kind of it was just like okay, like I mean, not even the ending, because like the way it ended with the therapist was good, I thought, but just the pirate thing, I think, was like that was so weird when he like fucking taped her up and stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I don't know. I'm like, how long have you been in here? Because you have done a complete 180 with your fucking personality, and I feel like you are batshit crazy. Obviously, drinking's a problem. Yeah. And I don't know, it was just like there was a little bit of different horror mixed up in there because that was like some Yeah, for him to like have embraced it so quickly, I think is what was like weird to me.

SPEAKER_00

Because he just was like, Okay, yeah, like here I am. I mean, to be fair, time probably was different for him in there. So he wasn't there, like I think double the time that like she had even like started to put their pieces together.

SPEAKER_01

So he didn't last long, it was like but days. Could you imagine? No, I couldn't imagine being no food and the weird shit that he was eating. He's like, you can eat it right off of him. That was so gross. They don't feel a thing, and I'm like, oh no, see, like I couldn't do that. I mean, if I was super hungry, I probably would, right?

SPEAKER_00

I mean, you have to survive something.

SPEAKER_01

Hopefully, your my mind just breaks automatically, like his, because like I wouldn't want to be aware. No, yeah, absolutely no. And then it's like, is that what we are in on earth now? Is there something else going on and we're just aware of this? Like the like true matrix shit. Yeah, like the glitches, yeah. Anyways, so half moon.

SPEAKER_00

I'm high, so I smoked some weed. That's probably the best way to talk about it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, just because I'm like, this could just go a number of ways with me. But yeah, I would play the video game. I don't know if I would see the movie again. I think it was enough for like if somebody Once was enough. Like if my kids were like, I'd be like, okay, I'll watch it with you, right?

SPEAKER_00

But I'm not gonna be like I'd probably scroll on my phone while we're watching it, if I'm being honest. But yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So did you watch Exit Eight? I did not, but you tell me about it because so this one, I'll be actually pretty quick.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because I don't want to spoil it because I know that's something we've got liminal space.

SPEAKER_01

But this guy, he just so it's in Japanese. Exit eight, it is a Japanese movie that's also like a liminal space. So this guy, like obviously, he's gone through something big. It you think like he's broken up with his girlfriend or whatnot, but she finds out she's pregnant, she needs him to come to wherever she is, whether that's the doctors or the hospital. He's just like on the subway, like trying to get off on exit eight to, I think he was gonna like, that's work, but he's gonna turn around and get back and go. But he's like in this space mentally, I feel like where part of that's happened, and then the other part is him just like thinking about it. I'm not using the right words, but he so he's like put in the scenario that's like a huge change, and he's trying to figure out if he's the kind of person that's capable of like essentially raising a child.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Does he like love this woman like that? Can he make it like you I feel like he's going through a pivotal point that like all men kind of go through where they're like, like it's time to lock and load. Yeah, figure it's lock and it's like, but can I? Right? So, because nothing really like seems to trigger it, but like he's getting off and like you know what you're looking for, because like you're a moviegoer and you know what the movie's about. Obviously, he doesn't, so he's like not paying attention to like stuff in front of him, whether it's like people or posters or whatever, but like after a few, he starts to like notice, and then he's paying attention more to the posters, the subway's starting to empty, so it's like beginning to just be like at some point just him, right? But the posters are like giving instructions for like the game essentially, and so it's anomaly game, like he has to look for anomalies. If there's no anomaly, like you keep walking through to go from I think it might be going down, so he's at exit eight and it might be counting down. So if he does it correctly, the next go round, which is completely identical, but at the end it would say exit seven.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

So it would go down, and I think he needs to get to like six, is where he's supposed to go per like the lady on the phone. So, and then it's just a horror. If there is an anomaly, you're supposed to like go backwards and like do this stuff, and essentially it gets creepy. There's obviously like jump scares, there are monsters, but they're like humans that like kind of like shape shift, like it was really, it was really cool. And I liked how it ended because he's helping a person that ends up getting stuck there too. They figure out that they're both real people and not like players, not gonna go to your death with them, and they essentially like beat it right together. And so yeah, it was good. And then like as they're like getting out though, it's getting like set up for like another person. And so I don't know how it's selective. I have no idea. I would have to watch it again, I think, but I don't I think it's like random people like go through it. Okay, and it's like almost in another reality because it's obviously there is a subway there, and lots of people are like commuting back and forth to work or whatever they're doing, and it like it almost like it branches off that timeline, and this person goes through fucking hell before it like goes back to the regular timeline and selects somebody else. Like, that's just how I thought in my brain, like maybe that's how like the space works. Cause I get all like super intricate about the mechanics of it and the quantum physics of it. It's so cool to think probably can happen. Yeah, but anyways, it was trippy, it was good. Okay, it was scary. I liked it. I would probably give it a gibbous. Okay. It was good.

SPEAKER_00

So worth checking out then for sure.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just had you have to like unless you know Japanese, you have to watch the subtitles, but it was really good. Like I would watch that one.

SPEAKER_00

It's usually pretty good.

SPEAKER_01

Like they have they come out with some even Korea, like some stuff's really like I'm just like, if you can get past like your brain trying to like listen and just read, yeah, they do a really good job.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So anywho, yeah. Okay, that's good to know. So that was that. Hopefully that made sense to everybody.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, I'm sure too, like the people that know will understand Japanese horror. But it's also kind of like that intrigues me without giving too much away.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and you can like I mean, I gave a lot away, but I can't like sit here and describe every detail. Yeah. And so it's just like, go see, go see that. But this is what it's generically about.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, good to know.

SPEAKER_01

And it's not long, it's like 90 minutes.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

That's good.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I'll definitely check that out. Like more of like the hauntings in the movies with like more of high tension. We'll start with whistle, which it wasn't bad. Like, to be fair, we watched this like with like we watched this on a sleep overnight, and it was we started it really late at night, and then we had to re-watch it like the next morning. And I'll say, like, the vibes I thought were good, right? Like the vibes were interesting. Yeah, it's good at nighttime.

SPEAKER_01

Because it's a darker movie as well.

SPEAKER_00

So it's like a supernatural slasher element where it's like these kids find like a mind whistle, and then you know, they blow it up. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

From past times. Yeah. And it's all carved and it's wood and it's super fucking creepy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And basically at this whistle, like whoever hears it, it's like a harbinger of death, pretty much. And as it goes on, these people already have, you know, kind of like Final Destination, where it's like you're supposed to die a certain way. Yeah. And death always comes to collect, right? So it's like these kids pretty much like sped up the process. So like some like one girl was supposed to be.

SPEAKER_01

And it's you meeting yourself when you die.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And that's what's essentially like chasing you. And they die the way that they were destined to pass away. So it was like it's just more sped up. So it's like one of the girls is kind of, I guess, like she was supposed to die of old age. So when she she sees like the entity that comes and to take them, it she pretty much just like rapidly ages. So she goes from being like a young, healthy 17-year-old.

SPEAKER_01

She's seven, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but then when they find her body, it's like a body of like a woman that's like a hundred years old. And so that's pretty much how it goes down. And like these kids are trying to beat that entity, that death.

SPEAKER_01

And you know, I thought it was there was no solu there was a solution, but it's that you have to pass it off.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you have to pass it off. Yeah. Like you have to kill, do you have to kill your own death? I know that like one of the girls like sped up, like she did it herself to kind of cancel it out. And so it was like, if you're dead. Because she got electrocuted, right? Yeah, like yeah, they did on purpose. So it's like they did it on purpose to like kill themselves pretty much, and then they die, and then that's like, okay, the slate is wiped clean, and they're good to move forward. Right. For now.

SPEAKER_01

For now, now that we're aware of it but if it is final destination-y, which it's it is just like different theme. Yeah, yeah, it was it'll the death will probably catch up eventually.

SPEAKER_00

Like, I mean, it was interesting. I would say it wasn't like a terrible movie.

SPEAKER_01

But like the teacher though, like the teacher just knew all about these. Like that was kind of cheesy, where it's like like a high school science teacher or history teacher. And he's like, he sees it and he's like, Oh, like just has all the knowledge. And I was like, that was kind of funny.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um no, the actor for it is I love him in like because he was in Sean of the Dead. Uh-huh. And he I just I would anytime I see him on the screen, I'm like, I adore you, and I don't want anything bad to happen to you. Yeah. Something obviously bad happens to him. But yeah, also kind of a dick. He was a dick in this movie. Like, this is the first movie I've seen him in where he's actually a dick. So, but but yeah, I would probably say it's like half moon, like low gibbous moon. Like, it wasn't bad, it's entertaining and it's creepy. There's a couple creepy parts. It's nothing. The horror wasn't like terrifying.

SPEAKER_01

But the concept of like, oh god, to meet yourself when you die, and that be what's trying to kill you. Yeah. That was it was cool. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, so half moon. Pretty decent.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so then we can go into and I did not watch Mortuary Assistant, so you'll have to tell me.

SPEAKER_00

So the Mortuary Assistant is based off of a game, and the game is pretty much you are performing tasks as a mortician. Okay. So like you are, it's supposed to be like pretty accurate to what a mortician actually does. I played the game, and while this is happening, you are like your boss is like this like really weird guy, but he kind of explains to you how there are things that are going on in the background, right? Where it's like one of these bodies, so you'll have like four or five bodies that you have to give, like do the autopsies and stuff like that. You you go through and you check all the marks on their bodies, you like embalm them.

SPEAKER_01

You're talking, yeah, you do all that stuff and recording everything.

SPEAKER_00

And then what happens is while you do that, not only do you have to do that, but you also have to identify which body is being possessed by a demon. Oh, cool. While also facing like the character, her name is Rebecca. She used to be that game. Yeah, she used to be an addict, and then she like lost her dad at some at one point, and so she's also facing like the demon is playing on her own like inner demons, you know. And so by the end of the game, you have to find the name of the demon, correctly correctly figure out their name, and then correctly identify which body is afflicted with like the demon, and then you have to put it into the incinerator. There's six endings for this game, right? Okay, so there's there's six options, six endings that you can, and it's all based on your choice. Did you play it all? I unlocked three endings. Did you do it on the Xbox? I think on Xbox and PlayStation. Yeah, I did it on well, I did it on his on my husband's PC, so that's how I did it. But I it's probably easier to play games on the scary. It's it's it's alright. I actually prefer using like the controller. Yeah, it's just like too much to do, like for me, it's too much to try to figure out like the keys and the mouse at the same time. So the movie is basically the same thing. It, in my personal opinion, was terrible. You know, we had a like this game was really popular for like three or four years. Uh-huh. And there were people that like believe because like they have like a a notice at the beginning of the game that says, you know, playing these games can open potentially open a doorway or a portal to and like allow a demon to come in. So it's like you have that aspect going into the game where you're like obviously probably not. Why do they think that? I mean, I guess it's like a thing, because like even like Zack Biggins, which even then he's also kind of like one of those like fakes, you know. But they say that like if you if you open the doorway, right? And that is just playing a game, just playing a game, or just like even like the mindset of thinking about it, kind of like what you were talking about, where it's like the mindset, you could bring it into an existence, or you could open up like your like your soul and your home for infestation, pretty much. So it's like if you leave food out, you're gonna get ants, okay, right? Uh-huh. Like you might not get them, but you could get them. Yeah. It's like a pretty high chance of getting them. So the movie, terrible. It it followed kind of closely initially, but then they kind of went off and did like all this other stuff, and like there's a point where like I fell asleep because I'm like, this is so boring, it's so terrible. It was like a shutter original, so it's those can be kind of cheesy and like low budget. I think if maybe they had like a higher budget and they were able to do more, it could have been pretty good. But as far as like at least staying close to the game, like it just it wasn't that it to me, it just wasn't that great, and I didn't think it did it very much justice. I mean, there were some there was a couple good jump scares, but for the most part, it just I don't know, it just didn't hit for me personally. So I'd probably give it, I don't want to say like a new moon, but like yeah, crescent moon. Yeah, it's a crescent moon. Oh, give it a crescent. I just I don't know. It just wasn't I was kind of disappointed, especially since I did play the game, and I was just like, okay, like it is what it is. But I probably wouldn't recommend it. I'd recommend the game for sure. The game is fun and like you're immersed in it, and so you feel like you're going through it. So maybe it's just like the game to me, which is better. I won't be watching that. I I wouldn't recommend it. Yeah. I just wouldn't. So play the game, that's a lot of fun, but not but it wasn't fulfilling.

SPEAKER_01

As a movie.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe if they remake and somebody, yeah, like you said. After that, Hokum.

SPEAKER_00

Hokum. Oh. I loved that movie. I thought it was so good. I loved it a lot. I loved the again the vibe and the aesthetic of it was just beautiful. Like classic, was it Ireland that they went to? I think you went to Ireland folklore, creepy. It just, I loved the way it looked. The way it looked was so like the weather scenes, just yeah, it was haunting. It was a darker movie, too. Yeah, like there are definitely some elements to it, which if you're somebody that gets triggered by certain things, I'd probably look those up before you watch it. I loved it. Like I wanna, like, I wanna, I would probably that would be like a comfort horror movie for me, to be honest. Like it was creepy. There was like it was scary to me.

SPEAKER_01

Like so he's going, so he's arriving, this man, and he has his parents' ashes, and he's essentially taken it back to like spread their ashes where they had their honeymoon, right? And essentially the horror is like that the keeper who owns the property has locked away a witch in the was it honeymoon suite.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the honeymoon suite.

SPEAKER_01

Because the honeymoon suite, when you access it, there's like a little mini elevator that goes down even further into like the basement. And then from there, there's even like a door that's like steel and locked that you have to open, and it like takes you down this like really dark haunted cellar walkway space, and then down at the end is like another door where this like witch comes and goes because she like she can access all of it, and so that's why he ended up having to like lock the honey room. Nobody can like rent that room, nobody's to go in there, it's like forbidden, yeah. But he really wanted essentially to go into that space.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and he was a writer as well. I mean, at first it was definitely to like honor his parents, it was to honor, yeah. But then there's like a mystery element to it as well. Yeah, everybody has like their version of the witch. Yeah. And I loved that everybody kind of some people were like, oh, it's just superstition. Some people are like, oh no, it's real, but yeah, that's that's you know, so like you have like everybody's different interpretations of it, which was kind of cool, which kind of added to like the mystery element, and then and then there's a girl who says like she wants to visit it one day, yeah, and just to see, and she ends up like going missing, and it was just really it was a cool story.

SPEAKER_01

Very cool story.

SPEAKER_00

I liked like like it wasn't in some movies that would be too much, I think. Like not only having like the witchcraft story, but then like the missing girl story, and then his story, they intertwined it well, but they did it really well where it all fit together really nicely, and yeah, it was like this like just this creepy, eerie, aesthetically.

SPEAKER_01

Even as he goes along, like just taking different things from different people, such as like the chalk, and you can draw a circle around yourself with chalk, and the witch can't like cross that circle, like little tidbits here and there, and then he actually somehow remembered where he's just like, Oh, oh my god, there's chalk, anyways. I thought it was cool. Like he would learn take tidbits from different people, and like when he was in the situation he got in where he's like trying to get the fuck away from the witch, because obviously it happens, it's a horror movie. He's like trying to like utilize what he has around him to like see if it helps him against this witch, and she's creepy, but it wasn't over the top, like it's like that's horrific in and of itself.

SPEAKER_00

I like the subtle stuff, like she's like like she was she was creepy enough on her own.

SPEAKER_01

I was like, Yeah, that bitch is like dragging souls to hell.

SPEAKER_00

So I personally I think I would give it a full moon.

SPEAKER_01

I gave I wanted to give it a full moon as well, and I would watch it again. Like, yeah, you said a cozy horror movie because if it's raining outside and it's dark and overcast, which it is a lot of the time here in Washington where we live, like especially during like spooky season, just throw that on and it's just like going when you're cooking or whatnot, and yeah, or you can cozy up on the you know, you could do lots of stuff with that movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I want to look up books that are similar to that vibe and read something like that because it was just really good. So yeah, full moon. Okay, so moving into more of like the survival type movies, we've got first send help with Rachel McAdams, which I love Rachel McAdams so much. I love Dylan O'Brien.

SPEAKER_01

She's like been my favorite since back in the day, day.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Dylan O'Brien, same. Like he was like one of my first crushes as like a girl, like styles, love styles. But this movie was it was badass, insane, hilarious. I good for her, yeah. Like that is like how I would sum that up is good for her. Yeah. Because her boss is a dick. She's just like this like sweet girl who just like has lots of like hobbies. She wants to be on Survivor, like she is a survivor like fanatic.

SPEAKER_01

That's how my friend Nikki is. Yeah, do you know how many tapes she's submitted, like to get on the show? She loves that shit. She'll like go put herself out in like the middle of fucking nowhere and try to survive off the land for like two days by herself.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Well, I mean, that's what this character does. Yeah. Like her boss is a dick. She got she got passover for a promotion for this guy who's pretty much a neppo baby. Yeah, he's like the Neppo baby. He takes a word for her words. Yeah. Uh-huh. And then they're supposed to go to like on this trip, like a work trip. And then on the way there, their plane crashes. And they are the only two survivors. Obviously, she's thriving. She's having a great time. Like, she's like, I know how to do this.

SPEAKER_01

Didn't he get injured right away? He got injured pretty badly. It's been like taking care of him. He's only alive because of her. Because of her. Yeah. And then he comes finally, like after three days, he comes to where he's like conscious enough that he's like interacting with her and stuff. And he's still just like Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, his main thing is he wants to get back to his like cushy lifestyle. Like for her, she's thriving out here. She's like, she's kind of like, I don't want to go back. I was nobody liked me back at work. They thought I was weird. And she's kind of like, here I am. I'm doing really well here. Yeah, I can do this. They kind of like, well, not kind of, they butt heads over that a lot. It's insane. They're fighting, like they, like they have a moment where you're like, okay, maybe they'll start to get along. And then he does something to like fuck it all up because he's just a dick. And so it's just chaos. It is just chaos throughout the whole movie.

SPEAKER_01

But she does see like they can easily get help, but she keeps it a secret.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, keeps it a secret. Yeah. She just, I just her whole the whole ending of this movie was just I loved it. I loved how it kind of ended up working out for in her favor. And yeah, like it's not a super like profound movie. It's definitely just something you have fun watching. Yeah. Like it's just fun. You don't go in thinking it's gonna be like this seriously.

SPEAKER_01

And to see Rachel McAdams, who's like the most gorgeous girl ever play this type of role.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I was like, this is wild. Yeah. Even Dylan O'Brien, like he's but her bird, I was so worried she has a bird now. Yeah, so that was the only thing. I'll say too, like, Dylan O'Brien normally plays like the you know the main character's best friend. He's always like that type of character, and so to see him take on like this like unhinged asshole too, yeah, was really cool to see. But yeah, I would say probably like a gibbous.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'd give it a gibbous. I'd watch it again. It was good. It was like you said, it was funny, yeah, it was intriguing. And then just to like also see those skills and be like, I should probably learn some like survival skills, yeah, just in case.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, we bury the dead. Mm-hmm. That one was a ride. That movie, I'm not gonna say it was scary, because to me it wasn't like it was creepy for sure. There was like that one part with like the garage, and that was like terrifying. The premise of this movie was that there was like a gas expl like a chemical spill, gas explosion type thing. It was like Australia, no, New Zealand, New Zealand, yeah, like near Tasmania. And so there's this happened, a lot of people died. There's still like chemical fires. Like 500,000 people immediately died, and then like the whole country felt it pretty much. Yes, and then the radiation to a certain point, right? Yeah, and so we do know that the like, yes, there are a lot, there's a lot of dead people, and some of them do come back. Like everybody knows it's been complicated.

SPEAKER_01

They've started these, they've started these like task forces using military and some volunteers to like go through and basically point out which ones are waking up so that they can kill them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But the whole role of like the volunteers is that they're going into these houses, they're clearing neighborhoods and towns like bit by bit. And a lot of these people are there because they have family there, and they're kind of like, you know, the military explains like we cannot give you any information on this. It you know what we know. We don't know about your family members, we don't know anything like that. Yeah. If you're here, you're here to help.

SPEAKER_01

And so they're pretty much clearing out the bodies and hoping that they see their family along the way.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and yeah, these people are hoping that maybe some of these will be their family members. So the main character, her husband, is in Tasmania, like right next to where, yeah, for work, right? And she's American and he's American. So right next to where the explosion happened. Yeah. So it's looking like she wants to go there to get, I think her thing is like closure. Um, we know that they had some real problems.

SPEAKER_01

And the end, but they're married and she's like going to get her husband.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so yeah, they go through and like she gets assigned like a partner, and her and her partner are like pulling out these bodies, and so yeah, like the military does tell them, like, you know, we're nearby. If you need anything, send off a flare and we'll come and help you put down the ones that come back. And they're not aggressive for the most part, they're like until they go further, super slow.

SPEAKER_01

It's it it takes well, it's been weeks, it's like some of them. Yeah, some of them maybe the stimulation of somebody coming through the house almost does it, yeah. Or there's some that are already just like up and wandering, and but in the beginning, which I don't know how beginning it is, at least like a few days since no, if not like months before they allowed more people in.

SPEAKER_00

So, but anyways, it's just it's interesting, like the take on like this type of zombie where it's like not fast and aggressive and like I mean, some are still fucked up. Some are, and then there's some where they maintain like some of their awareness as to like who they were. So like there's like an example where she's the father, yeah. She finds like a an RV as she and she goes, she breaks off by herself with like her partner to go find her husband.

SPEAKER_01

Because they're not going that way, it's way too much.

SPEAKER_00

But they encounter, yeah, they encounter some some bullshit. Um, which when you watch, you'll see what that is. But basically, she comes across like an RV filled with like a family of four. There's a father and then his two daughters and his wife. She pulls them out, she's using the RV as like a place to sleep for rest before she keeps going. And she wakes up and she can hear like them rustling around, and so she looks outside and then she sees the zombied father is digging a hole for his family. And so she kind of goes out and she helps him dig the holes for like this grave for him. And like put the bodies in. Helps him put the bodies in, and he kind of just like sits and then like lays down, and then she well, no, he he sits like in the hole with his head, like this, because he wants her to hit him on the head with a shovel.

SPEAKER_01

So she does, and then he kind of like falls forward and then she buries him. Yeah. And then that's like that was like a profound thing to see. Yeah, I was like, that was fucking yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Even like the ending, which I don't really want to give away, like that's something I think you should watch for yourself if you're if you decide to watch this movie.

SPEAKER_01

But I really liked it the way that it ended, like some of like like the twisty part, like it was a twist, but but not really a twist, but I was kind of like, oh all of this bullshit that she went through and she get where she got, and then she found out some stuff, and it was just like but also I so ascent like Lauren said, like she went there for closure, they were going through like some marital stuff, so what she falls upon, it's like no surprise, but it's just kind of ironic because that's life, like just because you get to the end doesn't mean you like have all these answers and have it together. It's just literally you never know. Yeah, and so it I really liked it.

SPEAKER_00

I liked it too. I I'd say probably I'd say probably a gibbous. A gibbous, yeah. That's pretty good. I I definitely recommend it.

SPEAKER_01

I really would watch it again, yeah, for sure, for sure. I thought it was a good take. Dangerous Animals. I waited forever.

SPEAKER_00

You finally watched it. Yeah, so dangerous animals. So there's two movies with the same title, but this one is the one where this guy is a serial killer who takes people out to sea and pretty much feeds them to sharks and then videotapes the whole thing. Yeah. And he ends up fucked up essentially kidnapping the wrong girl. Like he like she went through some shit, she made some sacrifices, yeah, but she ended up getting hers in the end, which I thought was great. But it was just like this, like it was like a fun movie. Yeah. Again, we've seen many shark movies. There's like another movie. It was a cool different take. Yeah. I mean, there is like another shark movie called Shark Knight, where it's kind of like the same thing where these guys kick, you know, take these people and they film like snuff films pretty much of these people getting eaten by like different kinds of sharks.

SPEAKER_01

An idiot fuck out there who's doing that shit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but this one I felt like did a really good job where it wasn't cheesy. Because like that other one is a cheesy movie. Yeah. Like it's I like it. I'll watch it if if I ever see it. Yeah. But I also love just shark movies. But this one I thought was good because like it also stayed true to like what like the native sharks would be in that area too. Like it wasn't it wasn't obnoxious. The guy was unhinged, but he was also just his reasoning, wasn't like it was just kind of like it just it is what it is. I just like sharks and I like killing people. Like, and I kind of like that because it's like it's not like this big profound reason, like it's literally just him just being like, This is what I do. This is what I do. I mean, he he did get attacked by shark when he was like a young kid, and that did kind of like give him like an appreciation for the animals, you know. But he said, like, you know, he does acknowledge that like a lot of these sharks will not attack unprovoked, you know, like a lot of them will just like come and sniff and then kind of go away. So he does he, he's like, you know, I do have to change I do have to like entice them to come get their prey or whatever, but um well getting blood in the water will do the trick.

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah, that's what he does. But when he gets his in the end, I was like, that was a good scene. So I like why I would rewind it and like watch it. I like to do that where it's like I wanna see.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So and then I also thought like the CGI was pretty decent for like these like big sharks, and like it wasn't like like I said, it wasn't cheesy. I I just thought it was good. So that's another one I'll probably say half. Yeah, I mean it's it's a shark movie, there's so many of them out there, but I always find them entertaining. Like I was just watching Jaws last night, and I love shark movies, so yeah.

SPEAKER_01

If it's on, you watch it, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So half moon. Okay, now we're going into sci-fi. Yeah. So disclosure day. Yep, that was probably like one you were very excited for. Right.

SPEAKER_01

I was so pumped for anything aliens.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I I liked it. I I know like it's kind of like a back and forth. Some people really hate it, some people really like it. I am on the end, like the end of liking it. Like, I thought it was good. I love like because Steven Spielberg did War of the Worlds, and that's one of my top 10 favorite levels. Yeah. And I love that the soundtrack sounded similar with like the yeah, with the horn and everything. The soundtrack I thought was really good. I thought that the premise was really interesting. I liked that these aliens weren't here to like kill everybody. Like they were here just to just kind of be here, like kind of around, you know. I like that this is probably pretty accurate to like, well, actually, I can't even say that it's accurate to like what our government would do now because they're literally just like, here, we got aliens, but that's like their distraction from what they're actually doing.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, I thought it was they need to give us more information, that's all I have to say about that. Like, obviously, yeah, they're hiding something. But this movie like shows essentially the same kind of government, not wanting to share, having the information for so long, thinking it's gonna be like super disruptive. And then there's like a couple of kids that end up growing up and they have this like ability. And so as adults, they're utilizing the ability to share with the world on like international news. Yeah, what's up? And yeah, I thought it was good. I always like hype myself up more, like I wouldn't give it a full moon, like it would definitely be half moon to Gibbus, like if there was a point five in there. I liked it because I like alien concepts, like signs. Like I like all, like it just alien type. Yeah, I like it.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I won't say it wasn't bad to me. Like, I will I will not say I hated it because I thought it was good. I genuinely think it's good. And I like I think it went on too long. Like it like I like the message of it though. One of like the arguments for not releasing it was like, well, what about the people that believe in God? Like, this is gonna fuck up their whole because you if God create but the nun, yeah, she created anything. There was a nun, and her her reasoning was God created the earth and he created us and he created the heavens and like the stars and all this other stuff, and it's kind of like, Yeah, do you think that we are his only favorite creations? You know, his only intelligent. Like, she's like, I don't believe that. I believe that he he saw how perfect we were and he wanted to make more. And I I kind of liked that after that.

SPEAKER_01

And where are we on the line of things? He probably already created all that shit, and we're like at the very end.

SPEAKER_00

So like anything, our planet is probably he's like, we're the black sheep of his creation, absolutely, yes.

SPEAKER_01

But I mean, I thought it was good. Like, I think he checks in on us and he's like, Are they still angry? Yeah, they're still fucking angry. Yeah, they're still angry for no reason. But I mean, I They're angry for being alive, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But I would definitely say, like, don't listen to what other people have to say. I think you should just go watch it for yourself, yeah, and then come to your own conclusion. I can understand why some people probably didn't like it, and but I thought I thought it was good. So yeah, I'd say half moon to gibbous. Yeah. Like it's it's worth watching.

SPEAKER_01

It is, yeah. So and I would watch it again just to like try to pick up more of like what I didn't get the first time around. Cause there's lots like we are obsessed with interstellar our our household, and we've probably watched it like 12 times easy, yeah, and we have no plans to stop. And it's like every time we watch the movie, it's so good, and you pick up new things, and so pending movies, like I'll watch again just to like what did I miss?

SPEAKER_00

Because I will say, like, I'm obsessed with the soundtrack for Interstellar, and I watched it all the way through once, and that whole vibe of the movie, I like it a lot, it just makes me really sad because you know the whole premise of it is just really sad. But it is I love the soundtrack film score for this, and like the film score for Interstellar is like probably one of my favorites. Han Zimber is like my favorite composer, but yeah, it just it was good. Definitely go watch it. Go watch it, get your own opinion. Yeah, there you go. Widow Widow's Bay. I love Widow's Bay.

SPEAKER_01

I love I love it so far. I love it.

SPEAKER_00

I still have a few episodes to watch, but for those of you who know, you know, like it is so good. It's he is just not for it in the beginning, though.

SPEAKER_01

He is not sold, and he's so holy poor guy.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, poor torture. The whole I love how like each episode is like a different like tall tale or legend or whatever for their little area, but then they still have like their whole background thing. And the way it ended was really good, really sad, but there was bits of horror. Oh there's bits of like like there's horror, there's thriller, like, and then there's just it's hilarious throughout the whole thing. Like, and the little quips that every character makes, like everybody is like weird in their own way. Patricia, all hail, Patricia. I fucking love Patricia. She's my she is like one of my favorite characters she's ever read.

SPEAKER_01

She's a territory one, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she's hilarious.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she is hilarious.

SPEAKER_00

Love Patricia. I love like her episode with like the I don't know if you've gotten there yet, but there's like a killer that's like stalking her. No, oh my god, when you watch that, it is so fucking good. The way that she did it was amazing. She's everybody, she's all of us when it comes to the situation. So I love Widows Bay. I love it. Like, I can't wait for them to come up with a new season. I can't wait to see like where that's gonna go and how they're gonna do that. I love the dry sense of humor in the main. Yeah, the whole thing is just like dry, like you said, dry sense of humor. It's so funny. It's just little quips, sarcasm.

SPEAKER_01

It's just and then it has like a spooky coming to life, yeah, you know, yeah, was history, but clearly can still happen. Yeah, still going on for sure. And that whole scene looks beautiful too. Where are they? Connecticut.

SPEAKER_00

They're like they're New England, right? Yeah, New England, because he's trying to do like we're the new Martha's Vineyard. Like he's trying to get Widows Bay to be like the new vacation tour. I mean, honestly, I would go there still. But like I think I would still go there. I want to go. Like, I love little charming seaside towns map just for the show. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, I I'd highly recommend it. Full movie buddy, full moon for sure. Yeah, it's so entertaining. Full moon for what I've done. It's funny so far. I can't wait to finish it. When you finish it, it's it's good. Yeah, the yeah, the ending is kind of sad. And nobody's happens like season two. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

I think so. Cause like I'm unsure. Yeah. Like when you finish it, you'll see. It's like the ending of it, you're kind of like, well, Apple TV made this one, right? Oh, yeah, Apple TV. Okay. So now I'm like, what? Like, where are we going now? Like, what now? Yeah. So, but yeah, it's good. I definitely highly rec recommend it in yeah, give or full full moon for sure. Full moon. Yeah. So wow. Okay, well. And that is a wrap on Midnight Cinema Society Volume 2.
